Geocities to close after 15 years of aesthetic "awesomeness"

Believe it or not, the webpage service Geocities is still alive—but not for long. Fifteen years after its original creation, Yahoo has announced that it will shut down the service later this year. An exact date is not specified, but Yahoo is warning current users to consider moving to other options, such as Yahoo's own Web Hosting service.

Started in 1994, Geocities was like the Facebook to Angelfire's MySpace—competing webpage services that allowed over-enthused HTML newbies to create artfully horrific webpages to represent themselves in the early days of the Internet. (I was a diehard Angelfire fan, myself.) Geocities was acquired by Yahoo in 1999 with the intent of extending Yahoo's reach with its Internet advertising and services.

Unsurprisingly, Geocities has declined in popularity in recent years thanks to the plethora of similar and easier-to-use services—not to mention the rise of social networks like MySpace that allow the same demographic to make equally horrific pages and try to pick each other up at the same time. Add to that the explosive popularity of various blog platforms and the suffering of the online advertising market, and it's really not a shock to see Geocities going the way of the dodo.

Windows Live to get social with Facebook and Digg, 18 others

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Or, in this case, partner with them. Microsoft has announced that it will be adding 20 new third-party feed partners and three new contact partners (MySpace, Hi5, and Tagged) to Windows Live next week.

The first means users will be able to include their Web Activities from sites such as Facebook (a deal originally announced in January) and Digg in their Windows Live network. The second means that users will be able to invite their friends to Windows Live and vice versa; Facebook and LinkedIn are also to become contact partners "soon." Microsoft's goal with this is quite obvious: to turn Windows Live into the average netcitizen's main hub for his or her social life, or at the very least to turn Windows Live into a social network.

Here's the complete list of new feed partners: MSN (Microsoft Network), Arto (Denmark), Bilddagboken.se (Sweden), Dada (Italy), Dailymotion (France), Digg (US), Facebook (US), Fotolog (France), Hevre (Italy), Hyves (Netherlands), Last.fm (UK), Live Journal (Russia), MClub (China), Metroflog (Argentina), Overblog (France), SmugMug (US), TypePad (US), Yandex (Russia), zoo.gr (Greece), MySpace (US, in the coming months).

If you've been counting, this means that Windows Live will soon have 31 feed partners including the ones it already has: Daum, Flickr, Flixter, iLike, Pandora, Photobucket, StumbleUpon, TripIt, Twitter, WordPress, and Yelp. When users update their statuses, share pictures, recommends an article, and so on, the activity can be set to be automatically added to the "What's new" feed on their Windows Live network.

Microsoft claims that there are currently about 500 million customers using Windows Live, which is the same number the company cited in January when talking about the number of Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger users (I guess not many users are using any of the other Windows Live services or applications). In either case, Microsoft wants to grow that number by having users invite their contacts from social networking sites over to Windows Live.

Microsoft is also trying to figure out different ways for users to share content with their friends already on Windows Live. The goal with this is to get current Windows Live users to realize that Windows Live can be used like a social network. Dont' be surprised if you see more updates to Hotmail and Messenger along those lines.

I find this a strategy an interesting one: it's simple and it's working, something we frankly don't see coming from Microsoft when it comes to the Web. That said, this is just a small stepping stone if Microsoft wants to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to social networking, though I will agree that getting your already large userbase to do much of the promoting is a good start.

In slightly related news, if you have been having trouble with birthday calendars in Windows Live Calendar, Microsoft claims it has fixed the issue. The Wave 3 version of the Windows Live Web services, which included Windows Live Home, launched in December 2008.

Bill Gates Funny Facts

1. Bill Gates earns US$250 every SECOND, that's about US$20 Million a DAY and US$7.8 Billion a YEAR!

2. If he drops a thousand dollar, he won't even bother to pick it up bcoz the 4 seconds he picks it, he would've already earned it back.

3. The US national debt is about 5.62 trillion, if Bill Gates were to pay the debt by himself; he will finish it in less then 10 years.

4. He can donate US$15 to everyone on earth but still be left with US$5 Million for his pocket money.

5. Michael Jordan is the highest paid athlete in US. If he doesn't drink and eat, and keeps up his annual income i.e. US$30 Million, he'll have to wait for 277 years to become as rich as Bill Gates is now.

6. If Bill Gates was a country, he would be the 37th richest country on earth.

7. If you change all of Bill Gate's money to US$1 notes, you can make a road from earth to moon, 14 times back and forth. But you have to make that road non-stop for 1,400 years, and use a total of 713 BOEING 747 planes to transport all the money.

8. Bill Gates is 40 this year. If we assume that he will live for another 35 years, he has to spend US$6.78 Million per day to finish all his money before he can go to heaven.

Last but not the least:

If Microsoft Windows' users can claim US$1 for every time their computers hang because of Microsoft Windows, Bill Gates will be bankrupt in 3 years!!!!!!

Cricket Game Explanation

"You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that is in the side that is in goes out, and when he is out he comes in and the next man goes in until he is out. When they are all out, the side that is out comes in and the side that is been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game."

Office 2010 will come in 32-bit, 64-bit flavors

Last month, a very believable rumor started flying around in regard to Office 2010 shipping in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Check out ZDNet and Within Windows to see how the conclusion was drawn. Everything pointed to Microsoft finally offering a 64-bit flavor of its Office suite, previous versions of which have only shipped in 32-bit or 16-bit flavors. In an e-mail exchange with Ars today, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that Office 2010 will be available in both flavors: "Yes, Office will have two separate 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Office 2010 will be the first to do this."

That's right, 64-bit versions of Windows will no longer have to emulate a 32-bit environment in order to run Office 2010, provided that the user has the 64-bit version installed. With 64-bit OS usage rapidly growing (thanks to Vista, if you're asking Microsoft), it's good to see that the next version of Office, expected to arrive sometime next year, will come in both versions. This should significantly help 64-bit adoption, not only because Office is one of the most-used products, but because other vendors (think Adobe or Sun) are likely to follow in Microsoft's footsteps when it comes to offering the next version of their products. For those wondering, Office 4.3 was the last 16-bit version, and Office 95 was the first 32-bit version (to match Windows 95).

Screenshots of the alpha version of Office 2010 leaked in January. Before Office 2010 arrives, though, Microsoft will ship Service Pack 2 for Office 2007 this month. The company is opening up a bit more in regards to the next wave of its Office-related products, so keep an eye out on more news in the next few days.
Update

It looks like Microsoft isn't just talking more about Office 2010, but Office 2007 as well. SP2 now has a more specific date, thanks to the Microsoft Update Product Team Blog: April 28. That's exactly two weeks from now, so try to sit tight!

Brilliant, isn't it?

And look at this symmetry:

1 x 1 = 1

11 x 11 = 121

111 x 111 = 12321

1111 x 1111 = 1234321

11111 x 11111 = 123454321

111111 x 111111 = 12345654321

1111111 x 1111111 = 1234567654321

11111111 x 11111111 = 123456787654321

111111111 x 111111111 = 12345678987654321

Can you equate 3 and 2 by some mathematics logic?

See this illustration:

-6 = -6

9-15 = 4-10

adding 25/4 to both sides:

9-15+25/4 = 4-10+25/4

Changing the order

9+25/4-15 = 4+25/4-10

(this is just like a square + b square - two a b = (a-b)square.)

Here a = 3, b=5/2 for L.H.S and a =2, b=5/2 for R.H.S.

So it can be expressed as follows:

(3-5/2)(3-5/2) = (2-5/2)(2-5/2)

Taking positive square root on both sides:

3 - 5/2 = 2 - 5/2

3 = 2

The Secret behind the number 11

Pretty Chilling - read to the bottom. Try it out.
If you are a sceptical person - still read on as it's actually very interesting!!

1) New York City has 11 letters
2) Afghanistan has 11 letters.
3) Ramsin Yuseb has 11 letters . (The terrorist who threatened to destroy the Twin Towers in 1993)
4) George W Bush has 11 letters.

This could be a mere coincidence, but this getsinteresting:
1) New York is the 11th state.
2) The first plane crashing against the Twin Towers was flight number 11.
3) Flight 11 was carrying 92 passengers. 9 + 2 = 11
4) Flight 77 which also hit Twin Towers , was carrying 65 passengers. 6 + 5 = 11
5) The tragedy was on September 11, or 9/11 as it is now known. 9 + 1+ 1 =11
6) The date is equal to the US emergency services telephone number 911.

Sheer coincidence...?

Read on and make up your own mind:

1) The total number of victims inside all the hi-jacked planes was 254.
2 + 5 + 4 = 11
2) September 11 is day number 254 of the calendar year.
3) The Madridbombing took place on 3/11/2004. 3 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 4 = 11.
4) The tragedy of Madrid happened 911 days after the Twin Towers incident.

Now this is where things get totally eerie:

The most recognized symbol for the US , after the Stars & Stripes, is the Eagle. The following verse is taken from the Koran, the Islamic holy book:

'For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced: for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah and there was peace..'

That verse is number 9.11 of the Koran.

Unconvinced about all of this still ..?

Try this and see how you feelafterwards, it made my hair stand on end:

Open Microsoft Word and do the following:

1. Type in upper case Q33 NY. This is the flight number of the first plane to hit one of the Twin Towers .
2. Highlight the Q33 NY.
3. Change the font size to 48.
4. Change the actual font to the WINGDINGS……………………
What do you think now????

First screenshots of build Windows 7 build 7077 leak

As you can see above, screenshots of Windows 7 build 7077 have started to appear around the Web. There are also reports that the 32-bit version has been leaked and is readily available on various websites. Nevertheless, a good source has told me there are no noticeable differences between build 7068 and any of the 707x builds. This is much more important than the information leak of build 7070, though it's not immediately apparently. In the "About Windows" dialog box, there isn't an actual build string as we've seen in previous interim builds. It simply says "Version 6.1 (Build 7077)." The only other build we've seen this for is in the beta build released to the public (which also was leaked before Microsoft gave the download to testers): "Version 6.1 (Build 7000)."

The build string for the latest build we know about is "7077.0.090404-1255," which indicates that it was compiled less than a week ago: April 4, 2009, at 12:55pm. Some of you will realize that this is 20 minutes after the supposed build 7105 was compiled, which is widely rumored to be a milestone build. Microsoft only increments the second digit of the build number if an important point in development has been reached. The software giant is expected to give a new build to testers this month, and a public Release Candidate build is coming in May.

Microsoft to kill Encarta later this year

Microsoft has announced that it is discontinuing its Encarta line of products. The software products will be gone by June 2009 and the website will go down October 31, 2009.

When I first saw this, I had to do a double take. I made sure it wasn't April 1 at least three times before I conceded. While looking around Encarta's homepage today, I stumbled on a message that Microsoft was getting rid of MSN Encarta completely: "On October 31, 2009, MSN Encarta Web sites worldwide will be discontinued, with the exception of Encarta Japan, which will be discontinued on December 31, 2009. Additionally, Microsoft will cease to sell Microsoft Student and Encarta Premium software products worldwide by June 2009." Looks like employees at Wikipedia and Encyclopaedia Britannica will be throwing parties tonight.

This is all on the FAQ page because Microsoft wants to clarify why it is doing this. The software giant says that the "category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed" and that "people today seek and consume information in considerably different ways." It doesn't go into more detail, e.g., lack of sales or Wikipedia's tremendous growth. The company, however, does mention that it will "develop future technology solutions" but doesn't say anything beyond that. For those users with Encarta on MSN Explorer, the October 31 kill date still applies.

Zero-dollar bills for art, zero rupees-notes against corruption

Artists have created zero-dollar bills for artistic purposes and to get publicity. But in the East it is used for some noble cause. A local NGO, Pro Public, released a zero-rupees note in notes as a symbolic fight against corruption in Nepal. The move looks like a copy of similar act in India against corruption.

A similar release in india was carried out by Fifth Pillar India, an NGO set up to fight corruption. It had printed over 200,000 zero-denomination notes that resemble Indian currency and had distributed them around the country in the start of 2008. It was asking people to give the notes to anyone demanding a bribe

Western world has also witnessed various zero-denomination bills - many of which are created for artistic purpose or symbolic representation of financial turmoils. Brain Romero, inspired by high oil prices and a devalued dollar, has created a nice looking zero-dollar bill. Simillarily artist Laura Gilbert was featured on CNN for her “The Zero Dollar.” She passed out some 10,000 fake “zero dollars” at the New York Stock Exchange to passerby’s.

At last, let’s look at a bigger picture of the Rs1000-look-like zero-rupees Nepali note:
