How to Block Ads in IE using inPrivate Filtering ?

Apart from loading web pages, there's one thing that most of our readers want their browser to do: Block annoying advertisements. Microsoft introduced a new feature in its latest browser IE 8 called "InPrivate Filtering". This feature allows us to ensure that our browsing session remains secure and private. The InPrivate Filter (enabled by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+F) is intended to block content that may potentially share your information.

The InPrivate Filter is 'smart' in the sense that it can and will (if enabled) automatically detect content which appears with a high frequency on websites that you visit. In this regard, the Filter learns as you use the web and can detect what is an advertisement or of similar content, and take action accordingly. By entering the 'Manage Addons' window, you can select how many websites a piece of content must show up on before it is flagged, at which point you can then determine whether you want to block or allow such content.

Given the functionality of the InPrivate Filter, it seems that all that is required is a "Subscription List" containing the locations of advertisements for the filter to function as other Adblock applications. This is similar to a "Block List" in Adblock Pro and equivalent software. With such a list, it should be possible to simply block certain locations outright without relying on IE to learn from your browsing habits.

With regards to a subscription list that will block advertisements outright without having to 'learn' your browsing habits, I am in the process of searching for such. I have stumbled across this link where someone has compiled an XML file of the blocked URL's from Adblock Plus.

In order to Import these URL's into the InPrivate Filter, you must enter your "Manage Addons" window, accessible via Tools > Manage Addons. Click the InPrivate Filtering button, followed by Import and then locate the XML file. The result should be IE8 blocking content from said providers outright, without the need to learn via your browsing habits. Doing so has blocked about 99% of the advertisements I see while browsing with IE8.

Steps Simplified:

1. Download the XML file. It is a compressed (.zip) file, you need to extract it first.
2. Open your Internet Explorer 8.

3. In IE8, click on the Safety button in the Command Bar, then go to Manage Add-ons.

4. Under the “Add-on Types” column, click on the “InPrivate Filtering“.
5. Click “Import…” to import the XML file you downloaded in step 1.
6. You’ll get a message that it is done and just click “OK”.
7. You can close the window now, and you’re done!

After doing this, the ads associated with the URLs you imported will be automatically blocked in IE (when InPrivate Filtering is turned ON).

Note: The rules will not update automatically by itself. InPrivate Filtering is OFF by default and must be enabled on a per-session basis. To turn it ON, select InPrivate Filtering from the Safety menu. To end your InPrivate Browsing session, simply close the browser window or deselect InPrivate Filtering from the Safety menu. (Shortcut key: Ctrl+Shift+F)

If you seriously hate ads, check out How to set up your router as a universal ad blocker so no pesky ads will ever make it through to any computer on your system.

Using Hosts file will block ads and malware links

Another easy way to block ads so that IE8 will not display ads and block malicious or rogue websites is by using a Hosts file.

A Host file is either configured to connect to 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0 which is computer’s local host - in other words, your computer. If you will download and replace the existing internet Hosts file in Windows, Mac or Linux systems, any malicious or websites that is known serving ads will fail to load in IE8 or any other browsers. The location of the internet Hosts file in Windows is in:

Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2000: C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

Examples of HOSTS file entries:

127.0.0.1 track.acclaimnetwork.com
127.0.0.1 ads.active.com
127.0.0.1 ads.digitalpoint.com

When you visit a website that is included in your Hosts file, IE8 will block it. IE8 will only display the content of the site you visited but not the ads.

Browsing using IE8 InPrivate Filtering and HOSTS file will not only prevent ads or malicious sites but will also make IE8 to load the webpage quickly which means you will not be distracted by any third party ads which can be malicious or will track your surfing habits!

Converting .jar file to .exe file using JAR2EXE Converter.

What is JAR file?
In computing software, a JAR file (or Java ARchive) aggregates many files into one. Software developers generally use .jar files to distribute Java applications or libraries, in the form of classes and associated metadata and resources (text, images, etc.) JAR files build on the ZIP file format. Computer users can create or extract JAR files using the jar command that comes with a JDK. They can also use zip tools to do so.

If you have Nokia cell phone then you must have come across the game files that are playable on your phone. Nokia supports Jar game files and these can be easily downloaded from the net.

But if you want to first try the game on the desktop and then install in the phone or just play on the computer itself then here is a small tool that can convert the .jar file into .exe so that the game can be played and installed on the computer itself.

The tool called JAR2EXE Converter will help you easily convert a JAR file (MIDP application, such as Nokia Mobile Games) to an EXE file (Win32 NHAL Emulator). You can run the midlets just like what the execution files running on Windows platform.

- Language: VB.NET
- IDE: Visual Studio 2005

How it works?
This program will run Midp2Exe compiler to convert JAR file (MIDP Application) to EXE file (Win32 NHAL Emulator). Then, it will copy the output file and the runtime library to the output directory.

So you don't have to type a long command line to compile your JAR file, then manually download the runtime library, unzip and copy to the output directory. Just select the output directory and the JAR file that you want to convert, then click Compile button, Finally, run the output EXE in the output directory file to test and enjoy :).

And if you only want to test the output file, just click Test button. It will run the output file, but will not copy the output file to the output directory.

Recommended Download: JAR2EXE Converter

How To Make All Your Previous Opened Aplications Load Again After Rebooting Your PC ?

Have you ever noticed, when you are in middle of some important work in your PC/Laptop, Suddenly, you need to reboot the system or say power fails, or system gets hanged, Microsoft Updates or some other reasons, etc etc.

Today we take a look at a cool free application that will restart everything you were working on after a reboot. It's called "CacheMyWork".

CacheMyWork is a handy utility that enables you to reboot Windows without losing your place in your work. It builds a checklist of currently open applications, and will restart the apps you've selected the next time you logon to the computer.

Cache My Work is great for occasions when you need to unexpectedly reboot, such as on "Patch Tuesday", after installing new drivers, or when Windows runs out of Desktop Heap, Handles or GDI Objects (which happens more often than I'd like - even with the fixes described here).

If you're like me, you avoid rebooting your computer because it means you'll forget what you were working on. Every time I have to reboot because of some install/uninstall/patch, invariably I forget half of what I was working on because I don't remember all the docs and apps I have to reopen (those 5-15 minutes between "shutdown all apps" and "logged in, Windows quieted down" are huge opportunities for me to be randomized and lose my short-term memory cache).

Recommended Download Cache My Work

Protect Your Computer From Viruses In Pen Drives ??

You must have had some annoying moments with USB pen drives viruses at some point of your life. Its so frequent that its considered to be normal by some. So how can we protect ourselves from this chronic irritation? I know nothing is fool proof, but with better tactics and preventions, you can save a lot of time and important data inside your pen drive once and for all.

How a virus in your pen drive infects?
Most of the active viruses infect your windows system as soon as you double click on the Pen Drive icon in your my computer. As virus always creates a autorun.inf file which is a system ,hidden and a read only file on your pen drive. It point to the main virus file which is also located on the pen drive. When user double clicks on the pen drive files pointed by the autorun.inf got executed which copies the virus files on your system.

The image below shows the Autorun file entries in some special characters when you right click on the drive.

How to protect Your Pen Drive from Viruses?
Let’s see how can we protect by following certain practices as below:

1. Disable Autorun on Your Pen Drive:
Open to Start >> Run and type “gpedit.msc” (without quotes) and press enter. This will open Group policy editor.

Browse to Administrative templates >> System >> double click on Turn off Autoplay click on Enabled and Under Settings >> Select All Drives in the drop down and click OK (as shown in the image below)

2. Scan Your Pen Drive:
Whenever you insert your pen drive / portable drive into USB port on your system make sure to run a virus scan with your anti virus before opening your pen drive contents in windows explorer.

3. Use FreeCommander:
FreeCommander is again a file explorer like windows explorer, so you just need to download it by clicking HERE and install it. After installing open your pen drive through FreeCommander (as shown in the image below)

Check if there are some additional files like autorun.inf , Funny UST Scandal.avi.exe, Ravmon.exe ,New Folder.exe etc or any other file which you have not copied or created, delete all these suspicious files on your pen drive.

4. Make Use of Software Restriction Policy:
Use software restriction policy in group policy. This one can only be used in WINXP Pro and Vista Permium and the higher. You can restrict the access of all the programs or executable files in USB pendrive through this policy.

When you want to access the executable files you are sure of no harm, you can turn off the restriction. This is a wonderful way to protect your pen drive from viruses.

5. Another Way:
Just insert your pen drive in the USB port, now a autorun window(usually it includes Open to view Files and Take no action options) will open to choose the program that will run your pen drive but just ignore it by clicking the Cancel button right after the OK button.

Now go to Start > Run and type cmd to open the Command Prompt window. Now go to My Computer and Check the Drive letter of your USB drive or Pen Drive.(If it is written Kingston(I:), then I: will be the drive letter)
In the Command Window(cmd), type the drive letter(as above is I:) and now hit enter. Then type the dir/w/o/a/p and Hit Enter.

Now you will get a list of files that are in your pen drive. In the list, search if anyone of the following do exist.
Autorun.inf
New Folder.exe
Bha.vbs
Iexplore.vbs
Info.exe
New_Folder.exe
Ravmon.exe
RVHost.exe or any other files with .exe Extension.

If you find any one of the file names as above, Run the command attrib -h -r -s -a *.* and Hit Enter. Now Delete each File using the following Command del filename.

Searchopener - Carry out multiple searches at same time !!

searchopener.com is one such website which allows you to carry out advanced search using various search engines on the internet which includes Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Ask. What’s more is that you can save these results like a list.

We all use search engines and at times carry out multiple searches. It is a little difficult sometimes to keep track of the multiple searches or the queries you entered while carrying out a comprehensive search about a certain subject.

Search Opener allows you to carry out different search queries across different search engines. It gives you two different types of options.

It allows to enter 3-4 different search queries and open them in different tabs within the browser.

These tabs are opened within the same browser you are viewing the website.

It also allows you to use multiple search engines. It supports Yahoo, Bing, Ask and of course Google.

Let me know what you like about Search Opener through your comments.

How to create a "System Restore" point manually in XP ??

What is System Restore?
The System Restore feature is built into Windows XP and is used to return your computer to an earlier state if you have a system failure or other major problem with your computer. The point of System Restore is to restore your system to a workable state without you having to reinstall the operating system and lose your data files in the process.

Note: System restore functions are only available to an administrator of the computer, therefore if you are not an administrator, you will not be able to follow this tutorial.

How to Create System Restore manually?
I think it's a good idea to manually create a restore point before you download and install any application from the Internet. To manually create a restore point follow these steps:

Step 1: Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click on System Restore.

Step 2: Click on the Create a restore point radio button and then click Next.

Step 3: Now give your restore point a description so that you know exactly what you installed afterwards, e.g. “Before installing games”, etc.

Step 4: Now click the Create button and your restore point will be created. Now if you ever need to revert your computer back to a previous state, just run the System Restore tool again and choose “Restore my computer to an earlier time”.

Any date that is bold means there is a restore point stored for that day. You can click on the date, choose the restore point and then click Next to restore your computer.

That’s it! You’ve just created a restore point in Windows XP. Note that backing up the registry and the system state is great, but you should also manually backup all of your Windows drivers. Enjoy!

Blogger is ready to launch Static Page.

A lot of bloggers using Blogspot will now heave a sign of relief as now they have the option of creating pages just like the way you can create pages while using WordPress.

What is the static page?
Static page is a page that is not included with your post pages of your blog. This page is usually used for the pages of About Me, Contact Us, Terms of Services, phone number, a map to your location, etc.

Note:
This feature is not yet available on your blogspot url. You need to sign into its draft version. Just like Google has Labs page for showcasing and testing new features and applications, Blogspot has draft. You can create up to 10 pages.

How to create a pages on Blogger?
To create, you must sign into draft by clicking here

Now that If you have logged into your draft blogger account, all you need is to go to your blog’s dashboard and visit the Posting section and find a new tab named ‘Edit Pages‘.

Now, click on the 'New Page' button. The post editor will appear, and please fill out as you want. After that, click Publish Page

Once your page is published, you can link to it from the new Pages widget. The Pages widget lets you add links to your pages as tabs at the top of your blog, or as links in your blog's sidebar. After that, an option will appear, whether you want that page on Blog sidebar, tab Blog, or No gadget. Give an option and then click Save and Publish.

In the Pages widget, you can decide which pages will have links, and in what order they will appear. You can also choose whether or not you want links automatically created for pages when you create them by checking or unchecking the box to the left of Add new Pages by default.

Please see the result on your blog.

You can create pages and also add them to either blog sidebar or to blog tabs under the header. Just create a page and you will be prompted automatically to select with the pages widget.

You also can manage and arrange this static page through Layout tab and then Page Element.

Welcome Blogger static page!

Is Blogger trying to stop the migration?
I still think that Blogger is something that people love using for its simplicity. Wordpress has the ability to create pages which does make a first choice for many developers as it is not just blog oriented. Blogger with the option of creating pages will obviously make it better for blogspot fans to stay on and not migrate.

What do you think? Will Blogger give Wordpress competition in the future?

We have received lot of problems where computers got infected easily by the viruses in the pen drives, pen drives have become one of the most easiest carriers of various types of viruses these days. The second most common medium of virus spread is Pen Drives after the Internet which is the top medium for Virus spreading.

Most of these virus files are hidden and their attributes are set as System Files. These suspicious files become hidden and are not visible in windows explorer or My computer window.

Use Text Trimmer To Trim the Text !!

Removing unneeded text from a text document can be a speedy or slow process. It’s relatively easy if the text that has to be removed is not linked to other text that should not be removed, say paragraphs of text. It becomes difficulty if the text that should be removed is merged with text that should say. One classic example is a html link list. Extracting only the urls of the links would mean to cut the beginning html tags and the end tags from the text document which would mean some work in a text editor. The find replace function could be helpful but it still means a time consuming process.

Text Trimmer is a text editing tool that has been designed for that purpose. It comes with different modes that can be used to easily remove text from documents. It makes use of two modes Block Mode and Mass Mode that can remove unneeded text from documents easily.

The Block mode can be used to mark a block of text in a text document that can be removed, copied or moved. It would for instance be possible to remove the first 20 characters of text from every line in the document which is not doable in normal text editors.

Text Trimmer can do that with just a few clicks. The combination [ALT Left-Mouse Click] selects the upper left starting point for the block, the next use of the combination selects the lower right end point. Everything in between will be marked by the software program.

The Mass mode on the other hand is rule based which means it can be used to mark blocks based on rules defined by the user. It is for instance possible to mark all lines starting, showing or ending with the < char or trim all text from the beginning to a certain character. The operations are easily accessible and it usually takes only a few seconds to define the text that should be trimmed and remove it from the document. Text Trimmer is a portable software for Windows.

Download Text Trimmer and Read Here for more Information.

How To Disable Restart Computer Message after Windows Update ?

It is very irritating when after the download of Windows Update; the system periodically pops a dialog box asking to restart the system.

Though Windows Update is a useful thing to do and Automatic Updates provide more stability to the system but wouldn’t it be great if we have a choice to install the update when we want without getting bugged by the irritating dialog box?

The message “Do you want to restart your computer now?” can be overcome by following methods:

1. Go to Control Panel -> System > Automatic Updates tab and select the option of “Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them”.

2. Also disable the service from the Group Policy Editor. Type gpedit.msc in the run box and navigate to Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.

Double click “No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installation”.

Select Enabled and click OK.

It would disable the dialog box.

Fun With Numbers!! Know the Numbers facts!!

This website is actually created by a mathematician and a lot of research has gone into it where if you enter any number between 0 to 9999 you get properties of that number along with certain facts which are very unique to the number.

Number Gossip allows you to give some interesting details which includes even jokes used with that particular number. For instance when I entered the number 99 here:

The results were quite a lot of fun. I got its various properties. Unfortunately this website only supports numbers upto 9999 and not any more. But just the voluminous amount of information available on ten thousand numbers is quite worth it.

You can check with other options in the web pages too!

Go ahead and pass some of your time if you love numbers on Number Gossip. Even if you are good at Math, you will certainly learn a few new things!
