All you wanted to know about 'hair fall'

What is the difference between hair loss and balding ?

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, is a term used for progressive hair thinning and alopecia areata, which is spot baldness or loss of hair from certain areas of the scalp, also known as patchy baldness. Baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia, on the other hand, is a condition wherein a person loses hair on scalp in a typical sequence and pattern. There is male pattern baldness as well as female pattern baldness. Hair loss usually starts at the temples and/or on the crown of the head. Thinning of hair over a number of years may lead to total baldness.

Do men bald more than women?

Baldness affects both men and women, though it is much more prevalent in men. By the age of 25, 25 per cent of men have lost some of their hair. The reason behind this could be attributed to a chemical called Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which builds up around the hair follicle and eventually kills both the follicle and the hair.
While women don’t necessarily lose all of their hair like men, they often get thinning hair. It could be due to hormonal imbalances, but can also be a result of pregnancy, lack of nutrients in the body, or even certain birth control and hormone medications.

What are the main causes of baldness?

There are many causes for baldness - alopecia areata, syphilis, traction alopecia, seborrhoeic dermatitis, post-febrile condition, debility and emaciation, during lactation, endocrine disorders, stress and strains, certain drugs like hydration, etc, hereditary factors, injury, burns, leprosy and X-rays burns, etc.
