Download ExcelArt to Create Spreadsheet Art:

Microsoft Excel allows users to insert photos or graphics files into the spreadsheet easily. However, since it is not a photo viewer or editor application, users can’t use Excel to open photos or digital images. It might be a bit of problem if users are thinking to export their photos into excel and turn their photo into some sort of painting canvas or colourful mosaics effect in spreadsheet. For some reasons if you are keen to export and convert some photos into colourful mosaics in Excel spreadsheet to create some spreadsheet art, there is a free and tiny application, ExcelArt, can get your work done instantly (rather you spend days to fill in the cells’ color and paint it manually).

ExcelArt is a standalone application which doesn’t require any installation. Users can download it via the link here and double click to run it. This utility will convert graphics file in bitmaps, jpegs, gif and PNG formats to spreadsheet art in minutes. The conversion process is quite straightforward. Users just need to upload the photo and click to “Create ExcelArt” button to do the conversion. Users are allowed to do some simple settings, e.g. set resolution, choose color mode: full color, black & white or sepia and select Excel version.

Different Online Web Services For URL Shortening

URL shortening can help us out if we are trying to share a URL on a social media networking site and our URL length exceeds the maximum character length allowed. We can also fool our friends into clicking on a link which otherwise they will not be willing to open.

For whatever reason, as a modern internet user you will feel the need to shorten the web address of a webpage. Instead of looking for a suitable URL shortening tool then, read each entry in today’s list which I have gathered. Below you will find 5 great URL shortening services which serve a variety of needs.

doiop is a helpful straightforward link shortening website. We can enter our long URL in the top text field and click on the blue “Make It” button to obtain the shortened link. If we want to, we can specify a keyword (they can be more than one as well) which will be included in the shortened URL. Having a keyword in our new URL will make it easier to remember. The links created by doiop will never break or expire.

Although TinyURL is one of the most used URL shortening websites, users mostly overlook two of the site’s best features: we can add the TinyURL bookmarklet to our internet browser for quick link shortening and we can enable link previewing so visitors can preview the content of a shortened link and be safe from any unwanted surprises. Head on over to TinyURL and explore these two features.

If you are looking for a simple and straightforward link shortening site, then you will not be disappointed be bit.ly. The site’s interface is as simple as it can get: you enter the long URL, click on the SHORTEN button, and obtain the shortened URL. Moreover you can create a free account on the site and pull out a history of all the URLs you have shortened so far. bit.ly also lets users share their shortened URLs directly on Twitter.

memURL has all the features of a great link shortening site. It has a simple interface and the bookmarklet feature. What is unique about this site is that it creates mnemonic shortened links; this means that the site generates links with keywords which are not proper words but are easier to pronounce than a random collection of alphabets. This site gives us easy-to-remember shortened URLs without the need for us to enter any keywords.

dwarfURL lets us create shortened URLs and then lets us secure them with a password. There is also a Firefox extension the site has which users can take advantage of. Apart from that, the site allows users to track statistics and traffic of their shortened URLs. This can help us know how many users actually clicked and visited our shortened URL.

What Is Disk Cloning and Live USB ?

Disk cloning is the process of copying the contents of one computer hard disk to another disk or to an "image" file. Often, the contents of the first disk are written to an image file as an intermediate step, and the second disk is loaded with the contents of the image. This procedure is also useful when moving to a larger capacity disk or to restore to a virgin instalation.

Uses:
There are a number of notable uses for disk cloning software. These include:

Reboot and restore – a technique in which the disk of a computer is automatically wiped and restored from a "clean", master image, which should be in full working order and should have been swept for viruses.

Provisioning new computers – Provisioning with a standard set of software so that a new user is ready to go straight away with a complete application suite and does not have to waste time installing individual applications.

Hard drive upgrade – An individual user may use disk copying (cloning) to upgrade to a new, sometimes larger, hard disk.

Full system backup – A user may create a comprehensive backup of their operating system and installed software.

System recovery – An OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) can provide media that can restore a computer to its original factory software configuration

Transfer to another user – A system sold or given to another person may be reset by reloading a known, previously-saved image that contains no personal files or information.

How it works ?
This article is specific to disk cloning on the x86 platform; specific details may not apply to other platforms. To provision the hard disk of a computer without using disk cloning software, the following steps are generally required for each computer:
  • Create one or more partitions on the disk
  • Format each partition to create a file system on it
  • Install the operating system
  • Install device drivers for the particular hardware
  • Install application software
With disk cloning, this is simplified to:
  • Install the first computer, as above.
  • Create an image of the hard disk (optional)
  • Clone the first disk, or its image, to the remaining computers
This can be referred to simply as a recovery disc.

List of disk cloning software:

Cross-Platform
Clonezilla (Diskless Remote Boot in Linux)
PING (Partimage Is Not Ghost)

Windows-only
http://www.disk-image.net/ (from Active@ Data Recovery Software)
Altiris - Deployment Solutions
Microsoft Image Backup (which is part of Windows 7)
Scriptlogic - Desktop Authority Image Center

Mac-only

Linux-only
PartImage (SystemRescueCD)
ntfsclone

What Is Live USB ?

Screenshot of ubuntu 8.04 running from a USB Flash Drive, a "Live USB".

A live USB is a USB flash drive or a USB external hard disk drive containing a full operating system which can be booted. Live USBs are closely related to live CDs, but sometimes have the ability to save settings and permanently install software packages back onto the USB device. Like live CDs, live USBs can be used in embedded systems for system administration, data recovery, or the testing of operating system distributions without committing to a permanent installation on the local hard disk drive. Many operating systems including Microsoft Windows XP Embedded and many of the Linux distributions and BSDs can also be used from a USB flash drive.

How To Add Watermarks in Microsoft Word 2007 ?

Watermarks are images or text used by people to protect their work from plagiarism. If you want to add watermarks to your documents, Microsoft Word is the best option for you. As it allows you to add either text or image to secure your personal documents.

I will be using Microsoft Word 2007 for this guide but it will also work on Word 2010.

So, let’s begin:

1. Open Microsoft Word document on which you want to add watermark and navigate to Page Layout > Watermark.

2. Open Watermark options and there you will see some samples of different types of watermarks you can add.

3. Select the one which you want to apply and it will add the text shown in the sample to your documents. It will look something like this:

Microsoft Word also enables users to add custom watermarks, texts or company logos in the documents as well.

4. To add custom watermak, go to Page Layout > Watermarks > Custom Watermark.

5. It will show you Watermark Options. To add a text watermark, select text watermark and fill in the details and click Apply.

Black Screen Fix : Windows 7 "Black Screen Of Death" Error Fixing Tool

A new kind of problem has been observed with some of the Windows 7 based PC called the Black Screen of Death. This black screen of death is not like the Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) as experienced with earlier version of Windows.

Symptoms of Black Screen of Death:
After logging on there is no desktop, task bar, system tray or side bar. Instead you are left with a totally black screen and a single My Computer Explorer window. Even this window might be minimized making it hard to see.

This is a relatively new kind of problem and Microsoft is Investigating into this Windows 7 Problem of Black Screen.

In this post I am going to share with you the tool to fix this problem with help of a free tool.

How To Fix The Problem ?
When there is black unresponsive screen on Windows 7 and you can not see any icon or any active Window, please follow the steps below :

1. Restart the Computer and login with the login and password that you use.

2. If the black screen appears and there is no icon visible on screen, Press the “ALT + CTRL + DEL” keys on the keyboard together.

3. A windows will appear with option to launch Task Manager, Simply Launch Task Manager.

4. On Task Manager, go to Application Tab and Click on New Task

5. Now type the following in the task window:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?GRAB=BLACKSCREENFIX"

and press enter.

Note: If you have installed Windows 7 in some other disk like D: or E: etc, please replace the c: with the drive letter because the above command assumes the default path of Windows 7 Installation.

6. When you press enter, you will see a download window, on that window, select the option “Run”, doing this will download the tool, run it and fix the issue.

Download the Black Screen Removal Tool HERE

Other Solution:
If you’ve changed your screen resolution and the screen went black and stayed black, there is hope! When you change your resolution in Windows, you’ll be asked to confirm the change by clicking Yes. The theory is: if you can’t see the confirmation, you wont click Yes. However, if you hit Enter, or something crazy (but computers aren’t crazy…) goes wrong, you’ll be left with a black screen.

To get your screen working again, do the following:
  • Turn off your PC
  • Turn your PC on again and hit the F8 key multiple times
  • Down arrow to Enable low-resolution video (640×480) and press Enter
  • When Windows Vista/7 loads, you can change the resolution again to suit your needs

Computer not recognizing your new external hard drive or flash drive?

Adding a new hard drive to your system is an economical way to expand your computing power compared to buying a whole new system. Sometimes, though, users encounter a frustrating problem after installing a new drive: Windows XP won’t recognize the drive in My Computer.

But before you walk through these steps, go back and verify that you followed the hard drive manufacturer’s instructions for installing and configuring the device. A key consideration here is whether the new drive is to be the primary (master) drive on your system or a subordinate (slave) drive. What you choose determines how you configure the jumper and cabling settings.

Basic Troubleshooting:
When you are installing a hard drive, it’s easy to forget to make two important connections between the drive and the computer. One connection is with the computer’s power supply, and the second is with the IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics), or ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment), interface cable. The instructions that come with the drive should include a diagram detailing where these connections are. Don’t accidentally bypass this important step.

After you’ve installed the drive, make sure all the internal connections look secure; one loose wire or connection could cause the PC to overlook the drive.

Once you are confident that all the physical settings for your new drive are correct, it’s time to tweak a few settings in WinXP. WinXP has two tools that you should use to make sure the operating system is recognizing your new drive: the Device Manager and Disk Management.

Device Manager Check:
The Device Manager lists all of the hardware components incorporated into your system and helps you alter their settings, if necessary. To access the Device Manager, click Start, open the Control Panel, and double-click the System icon. This opens the System Properties dialog box. Now, select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button. You can also open the Device Manager by right-clicking the My Computer icon on your Desktop, choosing Properties, clicking the Hardware tab, and then clicking Device Manager.

The devices listed in the Device Manager are represented in a hierarchical fashion. From the View menu, make sure that Devices By Type is selected. Next, click the plus sign (+) next to Disk Drives to view the hard drive(s) installed in your system. Find the name of your new drive and right-click it. Choose Scan For Hardware Changes from the context menu. This forces WinXP to look for devices that you have added to the system.

Disk Management Check:
The next step in verifying that WinXP is recognizing your new drive is to use the Disk Management tool. In the Control Panel, choose Administrative Tools and then double-click Computer Management. (Alternatively, you can right-click the My Computer icon on your Desktop and choose Manage from the context menu.) Next, click Storage and then double-click Disk Management. This opens a pane to the right that shows your drives.

If your new drive is listed here, try initializing it, if you didn’t already do that with the Initialize Disk Wizard when you installed the new drive. Right-click the name of the new drive and choose Initialize Disk. This opens the Initialize Disk dialog box. Select the new drive, and the system will initialize the new drive as a basic drive. Restart your system if you are prompted to do so.

Another action you can take in the Computer Management dialog box is to rescan the new disk. You don’t need to click the name of any disk; just choose Rescan Disks from the Action menu. The process could take several minutes.

When this process is complete, restart your system and see if your new drive appears under My Computer. If it doesn’t, then another possible solution is to partition the new drive.

Formatting The Drive:
The most common reason why a computer may not recognize an external hard drive or flash drive is because the external hard drive or flash drive is formatted wrong, or needs updated drivers.

An external hard drive or flash drive that is formatted incorrectly will sometimes not not show up on a computer. The majority of the time, this is the problem. Windows computers utilize two major formats: FAT32 and NTFS.

Mac computers use the format type Mac OS X Journaled. Most external hard drives come formatted as either FAT32 or NTFS by default. So, if you are using a Mac computer and the computer is not recognizing your external hard drive or flash drive, chances are good that it is because the drive is not formatted as OS X Journaled.

Alternatively, if you are using a Windows computer, and the drive is formatted as OS X Journaled, it won’t show up.

The two major Windows formats, FAT32 and NTFS, can sometimes have incompatibility issues, for unknown reasons. So, if your external hard drive or flash drive is formatted as NTFS and not working, try formatting it to FAT32, or vice versa.

This is a common issue among some of the mainstream external hard drives, such as the Western Digital My Book.

Update The Drivers:
One final solution is to update drivers through the Hardware Update Wizard. (Right-click the drive in Device Manager and choose Update Driver.) Of course, a new device should come with updated drivers, but it won’t hurt to check with the manufacturer’s Web site to make sure you have the most current drivers. After all, they are what enable WinXP and your new hard drive to communicate.

The thing with external hard drive manufacturers is, they assume that you want to use your external hard drive for backup (when you may just want to use it to store files). So, they tell you to install the software before doing anything else, in the directions.

If you have installed the software that came with your external hard drive, and it is not being recognized, try updating the software. Most of the time, there should be a “check for updates” option located somewhere within the software options.

If not, go to the manufacturer’s website and search for updated drivers/software for your particular device. After you have the software updated, restart your computer and try connecting the external hard drive again.

If the external hard drive still doesn’t work, try uninstalling the software all together. For example, if you have Western Digital Backup Utility installed, uninstall it, as well as any other Western Digital software, from the Control Panel Programs in Windows.

Restart your computer and try connecting the external hard drive. Your computer should recognize it. But if not, you may need to reformat it.

Other Options:
Ninety percent of the time, the above information should fix your external hard drive and allow your computer to recognize it. However, it may be a problem with the hard drive itself.

External hard drives are one of the most complained about computer accessories of all time. In fact, it’s hard to find any external hard drive with “great” ratings. Many people have complained about their external hard drives being DOA (dead on arrival).

This very well could be the case. You may want to consider returning the hard drive and getting a new one.

Block or Disable Browser Choice Screen on your Windows OS.

After getting slammed by European Union antitrust regulators over IE anti-trust case, Microsoft has been mandated to show browser ballot screen/browser choice screen to European users and provide an option to select other browsers from the ballot screen. Microsoft began serving up the ballot via Windows Update on Monday.

The ballot appears on Windows PCs where Internet Explorer (IE) is set as the default, and lets users download and install major and minor browsers from competitors including Apple, Google, Mozilla, Opera and others.

However if you are comfortable with Internet Explorer or you are a system administrator and do not want browser choice update screen to be shown to users then here is solution to block/disable browser ballot screen with simple registry key modification.

By editing the registry, you can if you wish block the Browser Update Choice, which is offered in the European version of Windows 7.

This a technique applies to all supported copies of Windows 7, Vista & XP and allows users to block the delivery of the browser ballot screen.

The technique is designed for system administrators responsible for managed environments under a Volume Licensing program.

But of course, the small registry modification can be applied by all users.

The following information is provided by Microsoft to help system administrators manage the display of the Browser Choice update screen in managed personal computing environments that are under a Volume Licensing program.

1. Open Run Command by pressing Win+r keyboard shortcut
2. Navigate to following Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\BrowserChoice

3. Now create new registry with
Value name: Enable
Value type: DWORD

4. Now if you do not want to display the Browser Choice update then enter value of above key as “0″

and If you want to display the Browser Choice update (default) set value to “1″

See KB2019411 for more details.

Ignore Sites That Force To Press The Help (F1) Key

Microsoft told Windows XP users recently not to press the F1 key when prompted by a Web site, as part of its reaction to an unpatched vulnerability that hackers could exploit to hijack PCs running Internet Explorer (IE).

In a security advisory issued, Microsoft confirmed the unpatched bug in VBScript, offered more information on the flaw and provided some advice on how to protect PCs until a patch shipped.

"The vulnerability exists in the way that VBScript interacts with Windows Help files when using Internet Explorer," read the advisory. "If a malicious Web site displayed a specially crafted dialog box and a user pressed the F1 key, arbitrary code could be executed in the security context of the currently logged-on user."

Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are impacted by the bug, said Microsoft, and any supported versions of Internet Explorer (IE) on those operating systems -- including IE6 on Windows XP -- could be leveraged by attackers. Previously, Prodeus had said that users running IE7 and IE8 were at risk, but had not called out IE6.

Customers running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 are safe from such attacks, Microsoft said.

Microsoft has recently released an Advisory named “Microsoft Security Advisory (981169)”

As per the advisory there is a vulnerability that if a user presses F1 Key on being asked by a Website or webpage, the website can run potentially malicious code or scrip on such computers. That computer can get hacked, information can be stolen or it may also lead to data theft.

It is an advice to all our readers and Windows XP, Windows 2002 and Windows 2003 Server users to beware of this vulnerability and do not press the F1 Key when asked by a website. This may leave your computer unsecured or infected with virus or trojans.

Note: Even if you are a Windows Vista User or Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 user, its a safety tip to not click F1 Key when asked by a website.

3. Sysinternals Suite
Sysinternals Suite from Mark Russinovich is a collection of more than 60 individual tools and help files for all aspects of your system. There are far to many great tools in this collection one of which is Autoruns, a great utility to see every single startup item such as applications, explorer add-ons, drivers, services and much more.

Also included in the suite is Desktops 1.0 which is a very neat virtual desktop app that allows up to 4 desktops on one screen, similar to the Linux feature, this comes in very handy in XP and Vista Home edition. You can choose your hotkey combination to toggle through the different desktops.
