Block or Disable Browser Choice Screen on your Windows OS.

After getting slammed by European Union antitrust regulators over IE anti-trust case, Microsoft has been mandated to show browser ballot screen/browser choice screen to European users and provide an option to select other browsers from the ballot screen. Microsoft began serving up the ballot via Windows Update on Monday.

The ballot appears on Windows PCs where Internet Explorer (IE) is set as the default, and lets users download and install major and minor browsers from competitors including Apple, Google, Mozilla, Opera and others.

However if you are comfortable with Internet Explorer or you are a system administrator and do not want browser choice update screen to be shown to users then here is solution to block/disable browser ballot screen with simple registry key modification.

By editing the registry, you can if you wish block the Browser Update Choice, which is offered in the European version of Windows 7.

This a technique applies to all supported copies of Windows 7, Vista & XP and allows users to block the delivery of the browser ballot screen.

The technique is designed for system administrators responsible for managed environments under a Volume Licensing program.

But of course, the small registry modification can be applied by all users.

The following information is provided by Microsoft to help system administrators manage the display of the Browser Choice update screen in managed personal computing environments that are under a Volume Licensing program.

1. Open Run Command by pressing Win+r keyboard shortcut
2. Navigate to following Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\BrowserChoice

3. Now create new registry with
Value name: Enable
Value type: DWORD

4. Now if you do not want to display the Browser Choice update then enter value of above key as “0″

and If you want to display the Browser Choice update (default) set value to “1″

See KB2019411 for more details.
