Folder Extensions to Create Desktop Icons

If you have deleted your desktop icons or just want to amuse your friends then here is some short but fun tip for you.

You can convert a folder into a desktop icon/shortcut by just renaming it and adding an extension after the name. What you need to do is just copy, paste and append the following extensions after the folder name to see what shortcut it turns into.

My Computer .{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

Printers & Faxes .{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}

Recycle Bin .{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Network Places .{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}

Note: These extensions will work only on the folder and not on renaming a file.

IMPORTANT: Do not try this on some folder containing important data as it will be difficult to regain it back. But in case you have done it already do the following steps to regain the data back:
  • Compress the renamed folder into the rar file
  • Now open the folder through the RAR, you will see the original folder in there.
  • When you browse to the folder your data will be present in there as well.
